“Mr Lumiere has an amazing personality; vibrant, effervescent, exuberant. But the true man behind this is a person with deep and sincere convictions; a man who is shy and retires into the recesses of his acute perceptions to view the world critically, analytically. In this he is helped by the immense amount of foreign travel that he does. His environment is the differing people of the world community. Thus he is in a central position to observe, at close quarters, man’s relation to man.” Back flyleaf of Kura! dust jacket.

It will be one of the tasks of this ‘digital biography’ to seek an answer for these questions. There are other questions as well. What freedoms can we enjoy with the ‘panopticon’ that is the World Wide Web? Can there be a reasonable balance between privacy and curiosity in the age of wired and wireless technology? How can we know who our neighbour really is? Does it matter? Should we care?
My intention will be to discover as much as I can about this man through the use of my computer, telephone and the Internet. You may actually be quite surprised at what I can and have discovered. If you follow along, you can learn some of the tricks of the trade as well. But, will you want to use them? Will you use them well? Will you use them for good?
The last question is perhaps the most important one. If you follow this blog over the weeks and months to come, you may find out a great deal about yourself .
